Ambition Achieved

Every year as I drive to work I see the most amazing poppy fields in the distance 'somewhere' in the South Downs. And every year, by the time I have a spare second to try to find one of them the poppies have faded and I've missed my chance.

Yesterday after school I met up with 2 of sons friends and their mothers. All masked up we went for a socially distanced walk. We started off walking through woodland. It was great to see the boys playing like 'real' boys - using sticks to prod each other with if social distancing got too close (at least I think they were doing that - they may just have been attacking each other).

After we'd walked for about an hour they suddenly called out to us to come and see something. We dutifully made our way through waist high nettles and brambles and we were so glad we did. We arrived in the most stunning field of poppies that spread out before us.

At long last - I achieved my visit to one of the poppy fields. I think that this will stand out as one of my rays of light during COVID-19. Whatever else happens I will have this memory.

On the far side of the field we could see some other people there were 2 ladies in long floaty skirts and wide brimmed straw hats - with the most adorable little girl in a pretty dress running through the poppies as they took photos.

In a desperate attempt to be part of this text book event we got the boys to stand in the poppies so we could take photos. And we got them - some with surly faces - one with one of them being superman and all of them unwillingly taken.

Then we got our boys to take photos of the 3 mums together (well socially distanced 'together'). Actually did quite well as my son did take a nice picture of the 3 of us in the poppies - one of the other mothers didn't do quite so well. As we walked back home she was flicking through the pictures and exclaimed 'you didn't even take a picture of us'. I didn't get a chance to ask what he had photographed - probably a football he spotted under a tree somewhere.

Anyway, nice memories - they don't come thick and fast right now. And in case you wonder - yup the post photo is one that I took yesterday. In fact all photos on this blog are ones that I've taken (unless I say otherwise - the housefly wasn't one of mine!).
