Fruit Fly Wars

Is it just me that suffers from fruit flies?

I genuinely try to keep on top of my fruit and vegetables (even eating them on occassion), however there always seems to be just one slightly soft banana or potato that creates an onslaught of thousands of fruit flies.

I can live with a house fly buzzing around - they don't multiply in their thousands overnight - fruit flies are worse than rabbits when it comes to reproduction. They are also amazingly quick - you're sure you've swatted one only to see it on the other side of the room thumbing its nose at you.

Even worse - when there are fruit flies in the house they want to share every glass of wine or fizz that you dare to have - there are certain things in life I'm not prepared to share.

So for a week now we have had all out war on fruit flies. My kitchen is full of fruit fly traps (what a waste of money) and also any spare bottle we had in the house with different things to attract them in, but not let them out.

We have one bottle with cider vinegar, one with an inch of Prosecco (what a waste), one with orange juice (doesn't work) and one with some Ribena (surprisingly successful). I even have a citronella pop up smelly thing - they like to use it as a platform to sit on! On top of this I have some icky fly papers that seem to catch everything in the area except the fruit flies.

My husband drives me mad as every time he goes in the kitchen I can hear him thrashing around with a tea towel. How he manages to do it so loudly I don't know. I really object when he does it whilst I'm cooking - who knows what we're actually eating - still I guess it's extra protein in these difficult times.

Anyway, we are nearly there, just 3 fruit flies left - I've spent the day throwing wet dishcloths at them. It may seem over the top worrying about it now there's just 3 left, but I know that if 2 of them get amorous tonight tomorrow morning there will be another 300 - it may also upset the one that gets left out of the party!

A delivery of fly spray has just turned up. Let's see if I can get the last 3 before nightfall - when they all go and hide....... where?????
