Muscle Memory

I really admire husband (sometimes), but don't tell him I said that!

When he decides he wants to do something he does it and he sticks with it. A year ago he decided he wanted to pick up the electric guitar - something he did years ago. So he got himself the kit and he practices. Every single day he practices - as a result he's getting better and better.

A couple of years ago he decided he wanted to take up surfing - so he got himself a board and he's been working at it ever since. This isn't as easy as guitar - we live on the coast of Sussex - not renowned for its great surfing opportunities. However, we've identified a few tucked away spots where surf does 'come up' (sorry not cool so don't know right terms!). However, this has to be on a day where the weather conditions are perfect, the tide is at the right height and all the flamingos choose to stand on their other leg.

When he took up surfing I was quite happy as I envisaged sunning myself on the beach watching my buff husband, perhaps braiding friendship bracelets or something. It's never quite like that. When the weather conditions are right in Sussex it's inevitably windy and absolutely freezing. Turned out yesterday the flamingos gave their other leg a go so we duly went to the beach. I have no idea where that wind was coming from - it was arctic. I'd love to have got a cool photo of him, but I only turned to face the sea once as I was acting as a windbreak so son and I could play draughts without the pieces flying off into the distance.

Still - nice to get out.

Son has grown out of his summer shoes - doom. It may seem easy enough - that I could just go online and buy some, but he is massively fussy about shoes. Over the years we have purchased hundreds of pairs that are unused. Going to be hard to get a new pair as the prospect of expecting him to queue up for 40 minutes before trying a pair on is just so unrealistic. Then just imagine if he didn't like any of the pairs on offer. Mad concept. Personally I'd force him to chose a pair - even if they had a scene from Frozen on them or something.

No solution to this issue yet!

I headed off to school with son this morning - wasn't really thinking about what I was doing because my mind was on the shoe issue. As I wasn't thinking muscle memory kicked in. The first I knew I'd mucked up was when son asked me where I was going. Without thinking I'd headed off to work - which is in completely the different direction to school. Actually quite complicated to get back in the right direction - requiring quite a few about turns and rat runs. But we got him to school on time - thank goodness.

Life is feeling very 'un normal' right now. I'm itching to know what the future holds - when work will start again (and/or if). The company I work for will be one of the last ones that can go back to normal - however, they have indicated that things may start moving a bit in mid-July (touch wood). When furlough started I didn't know how many weeks it would be so once I'd got over COVID-19(?) I packed in a million things that I'd been meaning to do for ages in the next 4 weeks.

Then it extended so I studied and learnt loads of new things - then I still didn't go back. I'm actually utterly exhausted I've done so much.

However, after last week's meltdown I'm going to make sure I enjoy what's left of furlough. I've achieved loads so far - now I'm going to appreciate it.  After all how often is it you get the opportunity to have an extended break from the rat run. I'm going to recharge my batteries so whenever I know what the future will hold I can grasp it with both hands and do it brilliantly.
