It would be a perfectly reasonable reaction to wonder what on earth today's pictures about. It would also be perfectly reasonable to wonder exactly why I'm so proud of it. So proud I have named it fugly and I'm going to carry it around with me on beach days!
During the pandemic we've been lucky enough to get a few shopping deliveries. Before the pandemic we'd worked tirelessly to reduce our use of plastic bags. Now when shopping is delivered they don't use crates and we're getting about 40 bags. Sometimes with just one item in them.
I don't hold this against the shops, they've done amazingly in very tough and odd times and I'm grateful they've stayed open. Anyway, as a result plastic bags have been piling up - we have them in the utility room, garage, tucked away in cupboards and in our attic.
It was getting ridiculous so I went online to look for useful things to do with plastic bags. This is when I came across plarn. Plarn is plastic yarn - yarn made out of plastic bags. Turns out once you turn them into plarn they are quite useful.
I duly made them into plarn and I've made myself a waterproof beach cushion. I know it looks utterly revolting, but I've no intention of collecting more bags to colour coordinate etc. The black marks on there are simply where the company printed it's name on the bag (and not mould!). It's really sturdy as I've knitted the plarn. I'm not naturally a knitter it's basically 2 massive scarfs that I've sewn together with......... more plarn.
Here's the really clever bit. The cushion stuffing is........ PLASTIC BAGS. There's a little pocket in the back so more bags can be added or they can be taken out if needed. Also means that when I'm on the beach I can put in some big stones to stop it flying away and joining all the other plastic bags in the sea.
Looking forward to when the lemmings stop filling up the beach so fugly and I can go and have our first trip together. Fear it may be a while, but you never know surf may be up soon and we can go back to our little beach that only a few of us know about (I'm not telling YOU where it is....).
Other moment of excitement today was getting the house back(ish) to normal. We'd completely rejigged it when schools shut down so son could have a home office. He's now back at school full time until the summer holidays. It's very liberating to put furniture back where it belongs. Only thing is now I can see just how disgusting our carpets are after months shut inside full time.
