Back in April I creosoted the extensive wood in our garden. Except the bit at the very front which is falling down - we still can't find anybody that will do the work on it as all builders are too busy right now. What was left over was our back fence.
The rear of this is on a reasonably busy road with a pavement running alongside it. So when we were in lockdown I couldn't creosote it as I'd have been breaking the lockdown rules. Then when things started to get back to normal I was nervous about being around others if they were using the pavement. Then just when I was ready to do this the heatwave came in - and I've mentioned how much I avoid sun.
So yesterday appeared to be the perfect day. The sun had gone, but it was still warm. So I grabbed a paintbrush and the creosote to get things done. It's actually not easy to get to our back fence. Essentially it's a 15 minute walk (I know that sounds odd, but it's true). We blocked access to the road because we kept finding the gate open - we didn't feel secure - so we boarded it up completely. So getting to the back fence was a case of driving around as the creosote is heavy. I parked near our fence and got down to work.
After a short amount of time I realised it was raining. It didn't affect me because there are trees over our fence. However, the rain got heavier and heavier. By the time I had about 4 feet of the fence left there was a rumble of thunder and the heavens opened. So there I am standing in the rain painting a fence with huge puddles of water being thrown over me every time a car went past. I dug my heals in and refused to move until finished.
I certainly felt a little conspicuous walking back to the car. Drenched to the skin. Dressed in shorts and a t-shirt - both covered in paint and creosote (my diy clothes). On top of that I didn't have a bra on and so to reduce the 'wet t-shirt' competition look I was carrying my creosote can in front of me like a shield.
As soon as I got home the rain stopped - I mean literally as I walked through the door.
Anyway, it's good to have got that done.
