I had a great day on Saturday. For husbands birthday I bought tickets to Henning Wehn at the Dome in Brighton. One of Son's friends kindly agreed that he could have a sleepover so we could go out as late as we wanted. (Well to be fair, one of son's friends MOTHERS kindly agreeed...).
Day didn't start massively excitingly as I decided to make a start on delivering the leaflets on my way down to the butcher. I made a really good start though - which I THOUGHT would put us in a good position for week.
Leaving the house for Henning took quite a bit of planning as it was going to be the first time dog was left alone in the house for an extended time. I put wee mats by the back and front doors, put the radio on for company and hid nice chewy things all over the place to distract her.
We decided to drive in rather than bus - journey in is always easy, but we've been bitten too many times around journey home - somehow there's always an extensive wait to get back to where we live. Though to be fair, since son was born we've not gone out loads of times - now he's 14 we need to get our freedom wings sorted out.
I couldn't be bothered to do an early supper so we decided to go into town and get something cheap and cheerful. In the end we decided on Leon, which is always a good option as far as I'm concerned (though husband was hoping for a burger).
As part of our meal I ordered some fries with vegan cheese on it. Now I'm not a vegan and the fact husband wanted a burger kinda tells you his preferences (carnavore), I didn't know what to expect. Do you know I thought that it was really lovely - a surprise to me. Sadly husband didn't agree so vegan cheese isn't going to be a regular in our house... yet.
After our supper we made our way to the Dome. The last time we were at the Dome it was for Romesh Ranganathan - how different it was this time. Last time it was the first thing we'd done since the lockdown was lifted. The whole of the Dome was heaving (or it felt like it was) and it was very strange to see so many people in one place.
This time it all felt quite normal and much more civilised.
I didn't know what to expect from Henning Wehn as we've seen him on panel shows (and always loved him), but I haven't been to see him do standup before. Wow - he was absolutely brilliant. The first half was just standup, but the whole of the second half was political and social commentary - looking back at COVID. I was absolutely blown away.
Son would have been furious with me as at end I was so impressed I gave him a standing ovation. Just me - not one other person in the theatre stood up - well apart from somebody three rows in front who wanted to get to the car park quickly!!!
Unintentionally we'd done really well with the car park. I'd forgotten the nightmare when we left Romesh, when we were up on level 5 and the whole car park was full of people who had been to see the same show as us. It took us 40 VERY PAINFUL minutes to get out. This time, by chance, we were on level 2 and tucked around a corner so we got into the traffic really quickly. I must remember that for next time - though to be fair probably choosing a different car park would make sense.
On arrival home dog went bonkers to see us - this was for 2 reasons, one she was pleased to see us, and two she was guilty. In our absence she had done 5 wees in the house (5!!!!!). 2 of them were on the mats by the door, but then she obviously got bored with that so the other 3 were randomly deposited in the dining room and sitting room. At least there was no poo!
On Sunday we had a lovely lazy day. Sleepover finished for son, but he and the friend he stayed with were meeting up with other friends to go go-karting. It was lucky the day was lazy as I woke up and my cold had gone up about 10 levels, I felt absolutely rotten and just went back to bed for the whole day. Basically I didn't get up until about 4.30 because I needed to go and pick son up.
Before you wonder why husband didn't, there was a certain amount of logistical shuffling of children around 3.00, where he had to pick up kids from Lancing and drive them to Lewes (nuts - but we didn't arrange it). So it seemed fair that I'd then do the Lewes to home run.
Because I was ill and son wasn't around no leaflets got done on Sunday. The plan was for us to do it as a family on Monday night to get things moving.
Best laid plans and all that.............. Monday morning and son made his way down to minibus - I was still in pajamas. Front doorbell rang and I assumed was son. As there was a minibus of kids at the bottom of drive and I was still in my pajamas (which trust me are a sight to behold as I basically wear old worn out clothes on my top half and dodgy longjohns on my bottom half). Plus I'd been up most of the night trying to sleep upright because of my cough, so I'd tied my hear up in a topknot on top of my head....................
Anyway, opened door keeping myself tucked out of sight expecting son to have forgotten his HE bag or something............ It was the minibus driver who explained that son had had an accident.
There at the bottom of the drive was son in a heap rolling around in agony - also trying to hold it together in front of a minibus of kids who would be gawking at him. There was no way I could leave the house - I pulled out the topknot and started to put an ankle length coat on whilst screaming for husband (who was yet to get out of bed).
He appeared and fortunately his sleepwear is far more OK than mine. Long sleeve t-shirt and shorts - and all black so no teddy bears on them or anything. So he rushed out to drive to help son. Minibus driver was amazing and helped to carry son up drive with husband - no mean feat as son is now about 5 foot 9 and definitely built for rugby rather than ballet.
Managed to get son into a chair, put a cold compress on him, gave him a painkiller and then still had to get ready for work.
Of course this then meant that son would not be able to deliver leaflets within given deadline.
So basically as well as work, and feeling really ill with a cold (like anybody cares about me round here), I have spent my week nursing son with sprained ankle (and let's face it - he's milking it for all it's worth). AND delivering leaflets!
The chaos gene is full flow at the moment huh!
Oh, and also I know I'm getting old - my targeted adverts on social media and internet are now river cruises (which appeal to be fair) and lessons on how to make hanging baskets - which definitely do not appeal. I've even had some for mobility chairs - you know the ones that tip up so you can actually get out of the chair!
What next, walking sticks and comfort trousers? I'll let you know....
