Firstly, I am thrilled to share that my eye has healed well. I wore a patch for a week and at one point was a little concerned as my eyelid drooped and didn't look like it was going to lift again. But now apart from looking like I've been out on the town (with just one eye - whilst the other slept) all is back to normal.
Lucky really because the NHS is under so much strain right now I think that they'd have let the eyeball drop out of my head. Though it has reminded me that I must set an eye test for son and I - the last one we had was before COVID started. I'll set myself a mission to book that by the end of the week.
I hate eye tests - they are all rather too intimate for me - with the optician practically sitting in your lap as they peer inside your eyeball. But there's no point setting it too soon as I need to give my eye a chance to heal 100%.
Always so many things to do. We need to get our son tested for Dyslexia as well. That was meant to be a task for November. Maybe we'll wait until the fuel bills come in - because the tests are not cheap and the free ones offered by the school assume that your dyslexia is text book.
As a dyslexic myself - undiagnosed until I had left school - I'm very aware that dyslexia comes in many forms (mine is process/memory - rather than reading/writing). Though to be fair in my adult life it's my dyslexia that makes me good at my job - so once you leave school it really isn't a barrier - in fact it's an asset.
Aaaaaaaaaaaanyway, difficult week at work last week - trying to get my head back into things. Hopefully easier this week. At least that coming back hump is over. I get my new holiday allowance on 25th - which is exciting - so soon I can start planning some time off again.
On Sunday we did husband's Christmas present. He's impossible to buy for because if he wants something he buys it - if he doesn't buy it it's because it's expensive - if it's expensive I can't afford it. So this Christmas I tried to find something a bit different. I booked the family into Paradox Place in Brighton. A building full of illusions you can take part in for photo opportunities. In the image with the post husband is 'world's most beautiful person' and I am 'world's hairiest person'.
It was actually quite good fun. We were in there for 45 minutes, which was about as long as you needed. Some was quite cool - where you could stand in a room and one person looked like a giant and another very small. There was also one of me sitting on top of a pint glass son was drinking from.
It's all the approaches that they use to make films like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Sadly the bit where you could do the Princess Leia message to Ben wasn't working. That would have gone down particularly well. Though I don't think we'll go back so we'll miss that chance once the kit is working again.
After that I'd arranged for us to go to a gamers pub for lunch. Basically it had a whole arcade of old 80's machines - PacMan, Space Invaders etc. etc. It also had a race track where you sat in racing seats with a steering wheel and pedals and got to 'drive' a remote control car around a racetrack. I have to admit I was utterly hopeless at this - husband and son got the knack of it immediately and raced happily around the track.
I didn't do so well. Within 30 seconds my car spun I then spent the rest of the race basically rocking my car backwards and forwards to try to turn it around. Needless to say I sat out of the second race.
The only problem with going for lunch at the gamers pub was that the food was all Vegan. Now I honestly thought I'd be ok with this, but realised husband wouldn't be too happy. We duly purchased our lunch (not cheap £50 for the three of us) and waited for it to arrive. When it turned up it looked ok. But the taste - the taste - the taste - it was utterly indescribable. It smelt disgusting - but the taste. I had about 3 bites of it and then just decided it wasn't worth it. Son and husband ploughed through their meals - none of us enjoying it.
For the next 4 hours I was retching. Every time I thought about the food I wanted to vomit. What was worse was it kept repeating on me - which meant I kept reliving the eating experience.
When we got home we looked up the place on trip advisor to see what others experiences were. Everybody was saying what an amazing place it was to eat. One person said 'My boyfriend only eats meat - and he didn't even realise it was vegan!'. I can only assume that her boyfriend was incredibly pissed.
To be fair though - there is a chance that it's a bug - because today my stomach is still churning (though regardless, the food was still disgusting), I have a headache and son is off school AGAIN feeling the same! I can't believe he is off school again. I expect to get another snotogram from the school - but genuinely he has constantly been sick since about September and was chucking up last night. I don't think it's just him though - I think that almost everybody has spent the winter sick this year.
Anyway, that's this week's update over. This week I'm signing off confirming I am most definitely not Vegan. Though it would be a hell of a way to go on a diet - nil by mouth!
