It's a little bit ironic

One of those life moments that tickles me happened last night.

Since son was 5 years old I have been turning up at school award nights with pride in my heart waiting for my little prince to win everything from best speller to all round best child in the school.

Needless to say, the only award he's won across the years is the most polite child in class. Which I'll take to be honest I am quite proud of that.

Last night was son's final school awards night ever. It happened after school at 19:00 and all the children were expected to attend in school uniform.

Now on a daily basis son asks to get out of school things like sponsored walks, sports days etc. etc. and husband and I rigidly dig our heels in and refuse to let him skive off because the ghastlyness of these sorts of days is essentially part of school. It helps you when you are older and have responsibilities because it stops you looking back at your school days with rose tinted specticals.

I used to dread snow when I was at school. If the playing field was covered in snow they used to make us go on a cross-country run. Cross-country runs have to be the most horrific idea on earth.

Aaaanyway, I digress, for the first time ever husband and I were filled with a huge dose of can't be arsed. Neither of us could be bothered to get ourselves smartened up, get son into school uniform, get in the car and drive to the next town, find a parking space and walk to the hall. Only to sit there and watch every other kid win an award.

Besides, as son wasn't going to win an award - who would even notice we were not there.

So we all stayed at home, husband went to play football and I curled up on the sofa watching Ghosts (the sitcom, not actual ghosts - in case you wondered). To be fair I am still getting over last week's bug. Feel ok most of the time, but not ok some of the time too.

Suddenly there was a shout from the study where son was on the computer.

One of his friends had sent him a message to inform him that he'd won award. Where was he?

Son asked what award he'd won.

You may have guessed the punchline to this already.

Yup, you're right. My son had won the attendance award. The only problem was - he hadn't turned up and so wasn't there to collect it.

FANTASTIC - I couldn't be prouder.
