If you ever wondered if First World Problems was the right name for this blog, today will change your mind....
This morning I headed off about an hour later than I was 3 weeks ago just as the sky started to get lighter. I'd left dog's full light up collar in the house annoyingly, but I do have an emergency flashing light I can attach to her collar. That's the arrow pointing to her in the picture - she basically turns into a shadow unless there is full light.
We headed off into the semi-darkness for the walk and all was ok. Oh, except for the fact that once again she rolled in poo!
When we headed back to the car I continued to throw balls for her to catch. A flock of seagulls came and landed on the field. I was trying to avoid throwing the balls at them and as a result the angle of the ball took it off to the right.
It flew over a fence - I was just thinking 'heck how will I get that back', when the ball hit a stone bounced high in the air and flew back over the fence to my feet. It was a remarkable trick shot. I was so excited I screamed out 'RESULT'. Sadly there was nobody around to witness this feat of amazingness, isn't that always the way.
Then around the corner came the dog walker cool crew. This is a group of people (who are actually very nice) who do the morning walk as a possee all wearing their hunters and wellies and with labradors and retrievers. I'm simply not together enough to join this crew. I have my cut off wellies, my emergency purchase from petrol station black coat (that son rejected) and the black and glitter bobble hat I was bought for Christmas from somebody a few years ago. It's not a good look, but I like to think it keeps the humans well away - and in fact, I KNOW it keeps the humans well away.
Aaaaaaaaaanyway, the cool crew came around the corner, dog ran up to the pretty dogs and started flirting. Then one of them suddenly jumped her and started humping away. We managed to separate them, dog was fraught and the other dog was FURIOUS that it had been stopped in full flow.
I apologised and explained that until that exact moment I hadn't known dog was on heat - it's always like that - no sign - until suddenly............. So that's dog on rubbish walks for 3 weeks now, we'd only just got her weight back down. It's also pretty difficult finding walks when the light is low. Well not difficult to find them, but I don't fancy tromping deep into the Downs in the darkness, if anything happens I'm miles away from everywhere. I suspect I'll take her around the poppy field, but they have fenced so much of this now there's not much freedom for her.
Actually I notice a field just around the corner has had big fences put around it. I'm told it's going to be for hire for people with dogs that need to be fenced in. This is great for those people who have dogs that are runners. There are quite a lot of retired greyhounds around here - they are always on leads because they are programmed to sprint into the distance. However, I don't think this field is open yet and I don't know what prices will be anyway. It's an awesome idea though. I shall be all over it once it's open.
Then after all this I got back to my car. I couldn't find the keys anywhere, every pocket patted down and explored. Then just on a hunch I tried the door - open. There were the keys. Still in the ignition.
I believe it says a lot about my crappy car, even with the keys in the igniton it's not worth stealing!
Anyway, once back home dog had to have ANOTHER wash. That's her 5th bath in 2 weeks. She still stinks.
Couldn't put collar in the wash because son has started doing his own washing. 3 days ago he put on a wash and forgot it, so 2 days ago he rinsed the wash, and forgot it, then yesterday rinsed the wash, and forgot it. I've put another rinse on. Once finished I'll be taking it out and putting it outside his bedroom door for him to trip over when he wakes up at about 10.00am.
Which is another point actually - son is on half term, husband has taken off 3 days to spend with him. I am officially the only worker in the house - BOO. I can hear them all having fun and yesterday I was upstairs working away whilst they watched Band of Brothers with the speakers on full. JEALOUS - well not about Band of Brothers (yawn), but that they are all off and having fun.
I wonder if there will be another walk adventure this week. I fear not as for 3 weeks now dog will be on the lead and we'll be trying to find remote areas where no boy dogs are to be found. Definitely steering clear of the two spaniels around the corner, who she flirts with outrageously, even when she's not on heat!
